The Channels tab is the basic place for image-editing operations. You can group layers together under one of the three tabs in the Layers window: the Channels, Adjustments, and History tabs. Layers are independent layers or groups that can be re-arranged, removed, and merged as a single unit.Įach layer is saved with its own filename, and each layer can be edited independently from the others. Inside a Photoshop document, Photoshop uses layers and groups to organize elements. You can save image files in file formats such as GIF, WMF, and SWF formats, but their usage is limited, and they are not as popular today.
Adobe has discontinued support for a number of older file formats. There are many other image file formats that are not commonly used today. Among those are JPEG (for images such as photographs), TIFF (for multi-page document file format), and Photoshop’s native PSD file format. When you first start using Photoshop, it will present a number of file formats.
